Article Here: http://www.quantumday.com/2013/04/sta... A galaxy that is experiencing a very high rate of stars being formed within it is known as a starburst galaxy. Within a starburst galaxy, the rate of star formation is so high that the galaxy consumes all of its gas. They are known as starbursts because of the frantic episodes of activity when stars are formed. This animation shows the method used to probe the gas around distant galaxies. Astronomers can use tools such as Hubble's Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) to probe faint galactic envelopes by exploiting even more distant objects — quasars, the intensely luminous centres of distant galaxies powered by huge black holes. As the light from the distant quasar passes through the galaxy's halo, the gas absorbs certain frequencies -- making it possible to study the region around the galaxy in detail. This new research utilised Hubble's COS to peer through the very thin outskirts of galactic halos, much further out than shown in this representation, to explore galactic gas at distances of up to twenty times greater than the visible size of the galaxy itself. Article Here: http://www.quantumday.com/2013/04/sta... Scientists observing 20 galaxies undergoing a starburst noted that they have an ionizing effect on gases as far as 650,000 light years from its center. Ionized gas is a gas that have lost one or more electrons. In a starburst, the electrons are lost when energetic winds from the starburst excites the galactic gas and knocks the electrons out of the atoms within. This animation shows a galaxy undergoing a starburst. The galaxy has messy regions strung throughout its arms that are intensely bright and forming new stars. The winds produced by these star-forming processes can have an incredibly far-reaching effect on their host galaxy. Credit: ESA, NASA & L. Article Here: http://www.quantumday.com/2013/01/ref... A new image from the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) telescope in Chile shows a beautiful view of clouds of cosmic dust in the region of Orion. While these dense interstellar clouds seem dark and obscured in visible-light observations, APEX's LABOCA camera can detect the heat glow of the dust and reveal the hiding places where new stars are being formed. The video begins with a wide-field view of the sky in visible light, before zooming in to the constellation of Orion and the region around the reflection nebula NGC 1999, with the APEX observations overlaid in brilliant orange tones that seem to set the dark clouds on fire.
